Here are some costs (average) for living that many of us face on a month to month basis:
- Are my costs similar, more, or less than the average?
- Are there any costs I could eliminate?
- If I were no longer around to contribute income to these costs, what would my family need to do pay these bills?
- Is $26 per month (a mere 0.47% of this bill) too much to pay to make sure my family isn't financially devastated by my passing?
Too often have I seen individuals drop their life insurance during difficult financial times. Wouldn't it be better to do without a cell phone or internet for a short time or even cut back on the food bill until things turn around than to leave your family financially vulnerable?
The $26 per month (less than $1 per day) shown would provide an average of $500,000 of coverage. Some quick math tells us that this amount would allow the family to continue their current lifestyle for at least 10.4 years*! That's 10.4 years to recover from a traumatic loss, gain education, find other sources of income, etc., all with out serious financial pressures.
NEVER drop your insurance during difficult financial times. It should be a priority! It is THE firm foundation of a solid financial plan. It's the safety net for your family. Drop other things, find work-arounds, sell stuff on eBay, do whatever it takes to keep your insurance in-force. Murphy's Law is a law not a theory! I've seen it happen, wept with the families, and sadly, donated to their crowd-funding account to help in some little way.
Are you uninsured or underinsured? How much coverage should you have?

*10.4 years ($5,534 (total amount) - $1516 (a family would most likely not be paying both rent and mortgage) = $4018. $500,000/$4018 =124.44 months/12 = 10.37 years. If the $500,000 were invested from the beginning this time frame could be extended tremendously.
